World Food Day- How to prevent food waste at home

World Food Day is a chance to show our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal.
Food waste is common, particularly in developed countries.
More than one-third of all food produced globally is wasted or spoiled.
Here are some practical tips to save food and to be more sustainable.
We are creatures of habit and we may sway to overbuying when we go to the supermarket.
We can make smart and practical purchases and restrict the number of visits to the supermarket.
Plan out your meals, and make a detailed shopping list with the ingredients you’ll need, and when you’re in the store really stick to that list.’

Portion sizes

We also tend to cram as much food as we possibly can onto our plates.
Almost everyone is guilty of this at the breakfast buffet – and the key is to be moderate with your portion sizes.
Avoiding large plates will help and using smaller plates will not only be more sustainable, but it could help with your overall health too

Save your food

Saving food in containers could help prevent food waste.
Packing food in containers and storing them in your fridge or freezer will be beneficial to save some extra pennies in your pocket – make sure the food doesn’t go off though.
Canning is also beneficial as it is a method of preserving food in which the contents are processed and sealed in an airtight container – providing a longer shelf life.

Maintain your fridge space

It is important to remember the foods that we have stored at the back of the fridge.
The older products are often unseen and they end up being thrown away.
We can move the older products to the front of the fridge and keep the new products at the back, so we can consume the older ones first.

Donate unwanted food

This is arguably one of the most important preventative food waste measures.
You can donate unwanted food to food banks for the people who need it and you can also donate scraps and other types of food to farms and companies to feed livestock.
